Earthquake leaves at least 21 dead in central Italy

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, leaving at least 21 people dead and many others trapped under rubble, reports say.
Many of the dead were in the village of Pescara del Tronto which was levelled to the ground and there were fears the number could rise.
Much of the town of Amatrice was reduced to rubble and a family of four were feared dead nearby in Accumoli.
The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome.
Although it struck at a shallow depth of 10km, its intensity was compared to the Aquila earthquake in April 2009 in which 309 people died. The epicentre was around Accumoli where several people died.

French police make woman remove clothing on Nice beach following burkini ban

Authorities in 15 towns have banned burkinis, citing public concern following recent terrorist attacks in the country
Photographs have emerged of armed French police confronting a woman on a beach and making her remove some of her clothing as part of a controversial ban on the burkini.
Authorities in several French towns have implemented bans on the Burkini, which covers the body and head, citing concerns about religious clothing in the wake of recent terrorist killings in the country.
The images of police confronting the woman in Nice on Tuesday show at least four police officers standing over a woman who was resting on the shore at the town’s Promenade des Anglais, the scene of last month’s Bastille Day lorry attack.

Syrian civil war: Turkish special forces enter Syria to push Isis back from border after night of air strikes and shelling

Politicians vowed to 'cleanse' the border of Isis militants after a suicide bombing at a wedding

Turkish special forces have crossed into Syria after a night of air strikes and shelling targeting an Isis stronghold near the border.
More than 220 rounds rained down on Jarablus and the surrounding area overnight as tanks moved to the border and rocket launchers were put in position.
The wave of bombardment started firing at around 3am local time (1am BST) as Turkish jets and planes from the US-led coalition singled out targets with air strikes.

Migrant life in Libya: Extortion, kidnappings, gun violence

Libya’s descent into chaos and violence over the past five years hasn’t spared migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who arrive in the country with the hopes of crossing the Mediterranean and reaching Europe. Since 2011, Libya has been swarming with militias and many of these vulnerable migrants fall prey to them. A young Cameroonian man told us about the horrors that he faces living in Tripoli – including frequent extortion, repeated kidnappings and even being shot.

Brice, aged 24, hoped that Libya would be his gateway to Europe, but it has turned into an open-air prison. In 2014, after spending four years in Morocco without managing to make it to Europe, he decided to go to Libya. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 264,000 migrants and refugees live in Libya. Like many other people, Brice thought going to Libya would give him a better shot at making the crossing to Europe.

But these hopes were an illusion. Two years after arriving in Tripoli, Brice still hasn’t set foot in a boat bound for European shores. Instead, his daily life is full of fear and violence. The armed groups that sprang up in Libya in 2011 take advantage of the lack of state authority to rob and harass vulnerable migrants. Brice has already been kidnapped once by militiamen once and, on August 3, he narrowly escaped another attempted kidnapping. He was shot in the foot while escaping.

Scorpene submarine leak: Huge setback for India as 22,000 pages of secret data leaked

Scorpene Submarine data leak: If the secret data was indeed leaked from France, this is bound to strain India’s defence relationship with France.

By: Express News Service | New Delhi | Updated: August 24, 2016 12:26 pm

Indian Navy seems to have suffered a huge setback after more than 22,000 pages of secret data related to the six Scorpene-class submarines being made by the French company DCNS in India was leaked, “The Australian” newspaper reported. The leaked data gives away the entire secret combat and performance capabilities of these submarines, and will completely negate their operational usefulness if China and Pakistan get access to the same.
India is currently building six Scorpene-class submarines, named Project 75, in partnership with the French company DCNS under a $3.5-billion deal signed in 2005. These submarines are being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, and the first of them, INS Kalvari, is likely to be inducted later this year.

Venezuela: Civil servants to pay for anti-Maduro vote

President Nicolas Maduro gives ministries 48 hours to dismiss public workers who signed a petition for his recall

Venezuelan civil servants who signed a petition for a referendum on removing President Nicolas Maduro from power must be sacked within 48 hours, according to a spokesman for the ruling Socialist Party.
Five ministries have been given lists of employees in managerial posts who signed the petition in favour of a recall vote against Maduro, said Jorge Rodriguez, the president's designated aide to monitor the opposition's referendum drive.
