Over 70 killed in Israeli strikes on al-Mawasi ‘safe zone’ in south Gaza

Al-Mawasi, where thousands of displaced Palestinians are sheltering, has been targeted numerous times since October.

More than 70 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds are wounded in Israeli military strikes on al-Mawasi, located west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health on Saturday put the death toll at 71 people and said 289 others were injured, including some critically wounded.

The attack by Israeli warplanes targeted tents housing displaced Palestinians and a water distillation unit in an area that a Gaza civil defence spokesperson told Al Jazeera was designated a “safe zone” by the Israeli military.

Concern over Belarus-China military drills, near NATO border

Belarus recently joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and is hosting joint military drills with China. What do the renewed ties mean?

Belarus and China began joint anti-terrorism military drills on Monday. Dubbed Eagle Assault 2024, the 11-day exercise will see troops practice night landings, overcome water obstacles and engage in urban combat drills.

The joint exercises follow Belarus joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a Eurasian political, economic and defense organization led by Russia and China.

DW asked experts in the region why Belarus needs the SCO and what the joint drills with China could mean for the region.

After 10 months of war, the humanitarian situation in Gaza ‘is absolutely atrocious’

As the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza enters its 10th month, NGOs are once again sounding the alarm. The Palestinians, who have been displaced several times in the enclave on the Israeli army’s orders, are crammed into overcrowded areas where humanitarian aid can no longer get through.

As the war between Israel and Hamas enters its tenth month, vast military operations are being carried out in Gaza, making the dire humanitarian situation in the enclave inexorably worse.

The conflict has displaced over 80% of the territory’s 2.3 million people. In Gaza City where 300,000 to 350,000 people are crowded together, according to the UN, Israel has intensified military operations in various neighbourhoods and issued multiple evacuation orders.

A leaflet seen by an AFP correspondent reads: "To all those present in Gaza City, the safe passages will allow you to pass quickly and without inspection from Gaza City to shelters in Deir Al-Balah and Al-Zawiya [in central Gaza]." "Gaza City will turn into a dangerous battlefield," continues the leaflet.

U.S. airman pleads not guilty to sexual assault of minor in Okinawa

A U.S. Air Force member in Okinawa Prefecture pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges related to the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault in December of a girl who was under the age of 16.

The case came to light in late June, around three months after his indictment, as local police decided not to disclose the incident. The decision has inflamed strong and long-existing anti-base sentiment in the prefecture, which hosts the majority of U.S. military facilities in Japan.

At his first hearing at the Naha District Court, Brennon Washington, 25, said, "I'm not guilty," asserting he is innocent of the charges.

High on Yamal fever, Spaniards think Euros victory is theirs

By Guy Hedgecoe, BBC News, in Madrid

"This undoubtedly surprises you more than it surprises us," Spain’s manager Luis de la Fuente told his country’s journalists.

His team had just beaten France in the European Championship semi-finals, setting up a showdown with England in Sunday’s final.

And surprise - of the pleasant kind - is perhaps the best word to describe what many Spanish fans have been feeling throughout this tournament.
