Israel's army chief says 'combat will continue without rest' in Gaza unless hostages are freed

The Israeli army chief of staff said Friday that "combat will continue without rest" in the Gaza Strip unless Hamas releases the remaining hostages. Hospitals in Gaza reported that Israeli fire killed over a dozen people on Saturday, including eight individuals who were searching for food, as Palestinians faced extreme danger trying to access aid amid air drops and tight restrictions on overland deliveries.

"I estimate that in the coming days we will know whether we can reach an agreement for the release of our hostages," said army chief of staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, according to a military statement.

"If not, the combat will continue without rest," he said, during remarks to officers inside Gaza on Friday.

Footage released by the Israeli military showed Zamir meeting soldiers and officers in a command centre.

Nordic countries hit by ‘truly unprecedented’ heatwave

Scientists record longest streak of temperatures higher than 30C in region in records going back to 1961

Cold Nordic countries are being seared by “truly unprecedented” heat, as hot weather strengthened and lengthened by carbon pollution continues to roast northern Europe.

A weather station in the Norwegian part of the Arctic Circle recorded temperatures above 30C (86F) on 13 days in July, while Finland has had three straight weeks with 30C heat.

Scientists say it is the longest streak in records going back to 1961, and 50% longer than the previous record.

German police expands use of Palantir surveillance software

Police and spy agencies are keen to combat criminality and terrorism with artificial intelligence. But critics say the CIA-funded Palantir surveillance software enables "predictive policing."

The surveillance software called Gotham, developed by US company Palantir, is billed as an all-rounder: gigantic amounts of data are brought together at lightning speed.

It only takes a few seconds to satisfy a police officer's curiosity: name, age, address, fines, criminal record. In combination with selected cellphones and the contents of scanned social media channels, a comprehensive profile of any person appears in an instant.

Indian oil refineries will continue to buy oil from Russia, officials have said, before threatened US sanctions next week against Moscow’s trading partners over the war in Ukraine.

Media reports on Friday had suggested India, a big energy importer, would stop buying cheap Russian oil. Trump later told reporters that such a move would be “a good step” if true.

Iran Is Holding at Least 4 American Citizens, Rights Groups and Families Say

Two were seized after Israel and the United States attacked Iranian targets in June, and two others have been held since 2024.

Iran has for decades practiced what critics call hostage diplomacy, a policy of detaining foreigners and dual nationals to leverage them for prisoner swaps and the release of frozen funds. In the aftermath of the 12-day war with Israel and the United States, Iran is once again targeting Americans.

At least four Iranian Americans — two men and two women — are in Iranian custody, according to human rights groups, lawyers and Hostage Aid Worldwide, a nonprofit organization that was founded by former hostages to aid families and that is in touch with the current detainees’ friends and families.
