As the earliest stages of a massive assault on Gaza City take shape, Israel is calling up tens of thousands of reservists to take part in the impending military operation.
The takeover and occupation of the largest city in northern Gaza, which Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said was one of the last Hamas strongholds, will require the military to bring in 60,000 more reserve troops and extend the service of another 20,000.

Figures from a classified Israeli military intelligence database indicate five out of six Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza have been civilians, an extreme rate of slaughter rarely matched in recent decades of warfare.
As of May, 19 months into the war, Israeli intelligence officials listed 8,900 named fighters from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad as dead or “probably dead”, a joint investigation by the Guardian, the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call has found.
Uganda agrees to conditional US migrant deal

Uganda said it would accept some migrants deported from the US, but not those with criminal records. The Trump administration earlier deported migrants to the third countries of Eswatini and South Sudan.
Uganda has agreed to accept deported migrants from the United States under a deal made with President Donald Trump's administration.
"This is a temporary arrangement with conditions, including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted," Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, permanent secretary of Uganda's Foreign Affairs Ministry, said in a statement Thursday.

520,000 people told to evacuate if Nankai Trough alert is issued

At least 520,000 people nationwide will be asked to evacuate for a week after a Megathrust Earthquake Alert is issued for a potential devastating Nankai Trough megaquake, the Cabinet Office announced on Aug. 20.
The government’s first survey revealed the number to be evacuated under a Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information bulletin.
One of three levels of alert will be issued under the bulletin when the possibility of a Nankai Trough megaquake is imminent.
