Declaration of famine in Gaza lays bare Israel’s disregard for humanitarian dut
The IPC’s findings that a quarter of Palestinians in Gaza are starving should mark an urgent turning point in this war
The declaration on Friday of widespread famine in Gaza by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) should mark a turning point in the war. The IPC, which represents a fastidious survey of available data, is regarded as the international gold standard in nutritional crises.
Long-criticised by humanitarians in other emergencies for its overabundance of caution, the IPC’s declaration of Level 5 – “catastrophic” hunger – in Gaza is a significant moment. Famine, under the IPC’s exacting criteria, requires three critical thresholds to be passed: extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition and starvation-related deaths, all of which are now visible in Gaza.
Merz Under FireGerman Conservatives Roiled by Chancellor's Decision on Arms for Israel
Let’s assume for a moment that it is true what the confidant of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is saying over the phone. It is the confidant’s own personal interpretation; it doesn’t necessarily have to reflect the views of the chancellor. But he has known Merz for a long time and believes he knows how the chancellor ticks. If his assessment is correct, then the great commotion surrounding Merz’s recent decision on Germany’s Israel policy comes down to a single, simple question.
Venezuela's Maduro rallies civilian militia volunteers, citing US invasion 'threat'
Thousands of Venezuelans on Saturday queued up across Caracas to enlist in a civilian militia in response to "threats" of a US invasion. The show of force counters earlier accusations by the Trump administration that President Nicolas Maduro is leading a drug cartel. Three days ago, Washington deployed war ships off the coast of Venezuela to curb what it says are drug trafficking activities.
Civil servants, housewives and retirees alike lined up in Venezuela's capital Caracas on Saturday as thousands volunteered to join the country's militia in case there is a US invasion.
President Nicolas Maduro called on citizens to respond to the current US "threat" and sign up over the weekend to the Bolivarian Militia, a civilian corps linked to the South American country's armed forces.

“They want Iran to be obedient to America. The Iranian nation will stand with all of its power against those who have such erroneous expectations,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during a religious event on Sunday.

One day last year in early fall, an "okami" proprietress at Sazanka-so was approached by a regular customer who talked about a rumor that the revered "ryotei" would close its doors.
When asked about the Japanese-style restaurant's closure, the okami, Reiko Kanazawa, 53, smiled and replied evasively that she was unaware of the matter.
In reality, however, she had heard about the possibility.
