The Israeli military will begin preparing for the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza City, it said on Saturday, as health officials said it had killed at least 40 people including a baby in a tent and people seeking aid in its latest attacks.

The announcement came days after Israel said it intended to launch a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City, the enclave’s largest urban centre, in a plan that raised international alarm. The Israeli offensive has already displaced most of the population, killed tens of thousands of civilians and created a famine.

European leaders to shore up Ukraine’s Zelenskyy for DC talks with Trump

Ukraine and its European allies have criticised Putin’s stance on the war after the Alaska summit as a way to buy time.

European leaders will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Washington, DC on Monday, seeking an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, after United States President Donald Trump dropped both his push for a ceasefire and the threat of punitive actions against Russia following his Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Securing a ceasefire in Ukraine, more than three years after Russia’s invasion, had been one of Trump’s core demands before Friday’s Alaska summit, to which Ukraine and its European allies were not invited.

Ash, a 7-year-old Australian Shepherd, followed her nose to help capture the search and rescue crown for Team Japan at an international competition held in Turkey in June.

But for her owner and trainer, Nagisa Nakano, the win in the rubble search category of the FCI World Search and Rescue Dog Team Championship wasn’t such a big deal.

“Winning the contest was nice but not our goal,” the 27-year-old said. “I want to continue training with Ash and work with local communities to prepare for disasters as you never know when one will occur.”

Hamas rejects Israel's Gaza relocation plan

Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Sunday that Israel's plan to relocate residents from Gaza City constitutes a "new wave of genocide and displacement" for hundreds of thousands of residents in the area.
The group said the planned deployment of tents and other shelter equipment by Israel into southern Gaza was a "blatant deception".

‘Pray for rain’: wildfires in Canada are now burning where they never used to

Canada’s response to the extreme weather threat is being upended as the traditional epicentre of the blazes shifts as the climate warms

Road closures, evacuations, travel chaos and stern warnings from officials have all become fixtures of Canada’s wildfire season.

But as the country goes through its second-worst burn on record, the blazes come with a twist: few are coming from the western provinces, the traditional centre of destruction.

Instead, the worst of the fires have been concentrated in the prairie provinces and the Atlantic region, with bone-dry conditions upending how Canada responds to a threat which is only likely to grow as the climate warms.
