China Creates Its Own Peace Prize

China’s anger over the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo has swerved into the absurd world of Black Comedy. In response China has established the Confucius Peace Prize as an alternative to Reflect the Chinese peoples’ ideals on peace (What the government believes it to be) which will come with a small monetary reward. One hates to disparage the idea of the promotion of peace and humanitarian beliefs that said somehow the Peoples Republic of China awarding such a prize suggests that the governments’ vanity and pride are wounded because Liu Xiaobo whom they see as criminal has been recognized for the promotion of a more democratic society as one of the authors of Charter 08.
With the awards ceremony taking place this Friday the Chinese government has “persuaded” 19 countries boycott the awards banquet. Some of those not attending: Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Cuba, Egypt, Iran and Kazakhstan a veritable who’s who of those who have a strong aversion to human rights, open government and elections which are free and fair.
Perhaps the Confucius Peace Prize can be awarded to Omar al-Bashir who is wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity stemming from the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region.
