Turkish riot police break through barricades into Taksim Square to confront Istanbul protesters

Officers tear down large banners and replace with a large Turkish flag

Hundreds of Turkish riot police have pushed past barricades blocking the entrances to Istanbul's central Taksim Square, pushing many of the protesters who had occupied the area for more than a week into a nearby park.

Police briefly fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon while some activists returned fire with fireworks, fire bombs and stones. Many protesters were forced to flee to Gezi Park, where many had been camping.

Demonstrators had earlier manned the barricades, prepared for a possible intervention, but vans easily pushed their way through.

Officers took down the large banners hung by protesters on a building at the edge of the square, and replaced them with a large Turkish flag and a banner with the picture of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the beloved founder of the secular republic 89 years ago after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
