A top Chinese general on Sunday sought to distance the country from claims by some of its scholars that the Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinawa, do not belong to Japan.

Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of staff of the People’s Liberation Army, told a security conference in Singapore that the scholars’ views did not represent the official position.

The People’s Daily, China’s most circulated newspaper, had published an article last month written by two scholars from a top state-run think-tank that argued Beijing may have rights to the Ryukyus.

Choose one confusing talking point and stick to it.



Campus festivals go risque

A student who helped make the menu said, "The menu contributed to sales growth." College campus festivals have begun but are drawing criticism for extreme sexual concepts. Bars at college festivals in the past were to invite professors and friends to share food and to talk, but such warmth has disappeared. A female student said, "In an ivory tower, this is too much. This is embarrassing."

For your next campus festival remember to offer food items with titles that sound like the latest porn release.  Have fun.

Mumbai Police on Monday detained one more bookie, Kishore Badlani alias Kishore Pune at Mumbai international airport in connection with the IPL betting racket, said police source.

Badlani, who had reportedly gone to Europe after his name cropped up in the betting racket, was taken into custody on his return, they said.

Police are now questioning Badlani as he could be a major link between the bookies in India and Pakistan.
