Coronavirus: Asian nations face second wave of imported cases

South Korea, China and Singapore are among the Asian countries facing a second coronavirus wave, spurred by people importing it from outside.
China, where the virus first emerged, confirmed it had no new domestic cases on Wednesday, for the first time since the outbreak began, a major milestone.
But it reported 34 new cases among people recently returned to China.
Singapore also reported 47 new cases, of which 33 were imported - 30 of them returned Singapore residents.

Greenland's melting ice raised global sea level by 2.2mm in two months

Analysis of satellite date reveals astounding loss of 600bn tons of ice last summer as Arctic experienced hottest year on record

Last year’s summer was so warm that it helped trigger the loss of 600bn tons of ice from Greenland – enough to raise global sea levels by 2.2mm in just two months, new research has found.
The analysis of satellite data has revealed the astounding loss of ice in just a few months of abnormally high temperatures around the northern pole. Last year was the hottest on record for the Arctic, with the annual minimum extent of sea ice in the region its second-lowest on record.

Trump ban on research using foetal tissue from abortions blocking potential coronavirus treatments

ban was imposed last year prohibiting government researchers from using tissue from abortions in their work

Amy Goldstein

A senior scientist at a government biomedical research laboratory has been thwarted in his efforts to conduct experiments on possible treatments for the new coronavirus because of the Trump administration’s restrictions on research with human fetal tissue.
The scientist, Kim Hasenkrug, an immunologist at the National Institutes of Health’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana, has been appealing for nearly a month to top NIH officials, arguing that the pandemic warrants an exemption to a ban imposed last year prohibiting government researchers from using tissue from abortions in their work.

Tokyo 2020: What happens if coronavirus causes the Olympics to be canceled?

While the IOC continues to play the business-as-usual card in public, contingency plans in light of the coronavirus pandemic are likely being drawn up. What are the options available if Tokyo 2020 cannot start in July?
Following talks with various global bodies on Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee has refused to contemplate the possibility of the Tokyo Games, due to start on July 24, being disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
"With more than four months to go before the Games there is no need for any drastic decisions at this stage,” its statement read. "Any speculation at this moment would be counter-productive.”

Putin says he's not a 'tsar' after 20 years in power

Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed comparisons to a tsar on Thursday, arguing he "works every day" and listens to what people want.
"Well, this is not true," Putin said when asked about being described as a Russian imperial-era ruler.
"Maybe someone else can be called a tsar. But in my case, I don't reign, I work every day," he told the state-run TASS news agency.

New polls show effect of right-wing media's dismissive and conspiratorial coronavirus coverage

Two polls released this week show the troubling effects that weeks of dismissive and conspiratorial coverage of the novel coronavirus from Fox News and other right-wing media outlets and personalities had on the American public.
Since President Donald Trump adopted a more somber approach toward combatting the virus, addressing the nation from the Oval Office and declaring a national emergency, top hosts on Fox News and in conservative media have taken the pandemic significantly more seriously.
But prior to that, right-wing media spent weeks downplaying concerns about the virus.
